Scholarship Information

Local 98 Members,

Here are a couple of great opportunities for those who are seeking higher education for themselves, dependents, or qualified family members.

First, the Local 98 Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce that three $2000 scholarships will be given away for the 2021-2022 academic school year. Anyone interested in applying must meet certain qualifications. The Committee will review applications as they come in.

If members or applicants have questions or if the Committee can be of any assistance with either of the opportunities mentioned above, contact Committee Chairman Jim Cools at [email protected] or call (734)307-9841.

Second, the opportunity to get a FREE college degree due to the participation of the United Association in the Union Plus Free College Benefit. This program makes it possible for Local 98 members and certain family members to earn an associate’s or even a bachelor’s degree at NO COST.

Third, is the United Association Scholarship Trust Fund. Here’s their message:

We pleased to announce that the United Association Scholarship Trust Fund is gearing up for the 2022-2023 academic year scholarship awards. Up to 112 scholarships totaling as much as $222,000 will be awarded this year, including 106 for students pursuing undergraduate studies and up to six for students pursuing graduate studies. Scholarships range from $1,500 to $5,000 each. Generally, dependents of UA members who are pursuing a post-high school education at an accredited college or university may apply for a scholarship (please see eligibility requirements and award criteria in the detailed instructions found with the application). The deadline for submitting applications is June 9, 2022.

Applications are exclusively accepted electronically through https://uascholarshipfund.communityforce.com/. The application is scheduled to go live on February 25th and potential applicants can check that website and click on the “Login” icon at the top right corner for additional instructions to access and submit applications. Note that upon logging in, users should be sure to click on the scholarship titled 2022 United Association Scholarship.

Awards will primarily be based on academic achievement and potential, personal achievement, and community involvement. Financial need may also be considered. Scholarships will be awarded without regard to race, color, religion, sex or national origin. Applications will be judged by an independent and impartial Selection Committee, comprised of distinguished members of the community. The Selection Committee may request information concerning the financial circumstances of applicants and use this information in the award of scholarships. Also, note that because UA scholarships do not automatically renew each year, receiving an award in one year does not guarantee you awards in future years.

In addition, six scholarships will be given to “Second Chance” awardees. Those selected will be students whose academic achievement is not the best in their region, but who demonstrate they want another chance at an education to advance their potential for higher-paying employment.

We would like to thank everyone for supporting the Fund, and look forward to awarding our next round of scholarships to our deserving UA students.

COVID-19 Information – Vaccine – Tests

Yes it’s getting old. Yes we are all ticked off about this pandemic in our industry. We thank all of you for helping each other out and doing the best you can. We have many Brothers and Sisters working in hospitals, surgical centers, and other healthcare facilities. Any facility that is a Medicare/Medicaid facility is required to comply with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Interim Final Rule. The CMS Rule requires all staff, including anyone contracted to work in the facilities, to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and the flu. We have received confirmation letters from Ascension, Henry Ford, and Trinity Health Systems. You must get vaccinated in order to work at these places. Many companies outside of the healthcare industry have implemented their own rules and guidelines that include vaccination. DTE has recently joined the fray with hurdle to get on site. It is still your choice; all I can suggest is contact your doctor and educate yourself. The contractors are running out of options to place non-vaccinated members to other jobs they may not have available, eventually a lay-off will be harder to obtain.

Here is some of the misinformation I have been sent from members this week, and yes I am worn out as well. If you worry about being chipped, I hope you do not carry a phone, that’s a big chip right there. I am very serious about this as I have been told this is the start of concentration camps. I strongly recommend any member who believes this to visit the Holocaust Center in Farmington Hills to see humanity at its height of evil against our fellow  man and recheck your thoughts. I can assure you there will be another variant of this latest one so “we together” are in this for the long haul. The less this thing spreads the sooner it will stop mutating into new variants.

You can now get 4 free at home COVID-19 tests per residential address. Go to COVIDtests.gov to request yours today.

Please return that to the hall and note that it takes 30-60 days to set up. It is your responsibility to check your location on the Out of Work List. Make sure your contact information is up to date as well as MUST and other certifications.
